Fair enough. If I was in that position, though, and knew I was likely
to be, I would ask the airline when checking in for the outward
journey, or at the time of booking.

Friendly, no, but I wouldn't rely on being handed that kind of
information on a plate, especially if in a hurry. Many airports are
served by train from the city rather than bus, and the train is often a
normal one that happens to stop at the airport. None of those will
have that information, usually...
Maybe the air traveller gets their hand held more in the US...
