Be careful, because many BA flights from the US to Italy have you land
in Heathrow on the flight from the US only to have you depart from
Gatwick for the flight to Rome. The transfer is a pain and you have to
arrange and pay for it yourself.

Alitalia is not my favorite airline, but it's not really all that bad.
Someone reported a truly bad flight, but anyone who flies frequently
can relate truly bad flights on every airline.

I usually fly either Alitalia or Lufthansa when I go to the US. I
prefer Lufthansa, partly because they have good connections to where I
live, and the service is usually quite good. However, if Alitalia is
cheaper, I fly Alitalia and usually have no complaints about their
flights either.

If you find a good connection and good price on Alitalia, take it.
Even if the airline gets sold, the buyer is going to be operating the
same flights.
