I disagree. In my experience the wedding ceremony is much more important.
I was married in my wife`s village 10 years ago. And we had a local wedding
with guests, monks and the works.
This was on the request of my wife`s parents, so that everybody could see -
friends, neighbours and - that we were indeed married.
This was very important to them. This was a face thing. We never bothered to
register at the amphur as they were totally indifferent about that.
Many upcountry rural weddings are never registred at the amphur, but to
everybody else involved they are indeed married, although not in the eyes of
the authourities.
