Right, not as a day trip, you'd have to stay the night. There are buses
between Chiang Mai and Sukhothai, or you can take the train via Phitsanuloke.
Bus is faster, maybe 4-5 hours or so.
You don't need an organized tour. Rent any kind of transportation in Sukhothai
or just take the local transport to the old town. The historical site near
Sri Satchanalai is nice too, but you'd need your own tranport for that.
