YOU'LL BE SORRY!! Actually, if you are as interested and curious in
Japan as you seem, eager to see as much as possible, etc., it hardly
makes any difference where you start--you'll be back!

Where will you be staying in Osaka?

I truncated all but one disjunct sentence in a earlier comment in which
I mention that Hiroshima is a shlep from Kyoto (particularly for what
it has to offer). The full spiel, is that you might consider a night
or two in Fukuoka/Hakata. This would allow access to Nagasaki (which I
think is a charming town) and points south, as well as Hiroshima,
Miyajima nd other points of interest in that area of Japan. I like
Fukuoka a lot.

Nagasaki as a base is more difficult too, since the train line isn't on
the JR pass, or at least not convenient.

We had a great time in Kobe; booked for two nights but extended to a
third. And we left much left to do there. Finally got a line on hostess
bars and what that's all about. Damned interesting.

We tried to make Koya-San but enough is enough, we just couldn't jam it
in. We hope to take it in in a future trip to the Chubu area that
bases partially out of Nagoya and explores the Shima peninsula
