I took this ride a few years back on 3rd class and that was cheap but very
uncomfortable to sit on tiny wooden seats for so many hours not to mention
when we were supposed to sleep. Quite an ordeal really.
You will definitely need a sleeper compartment. And in order to be sure to
get one, you should probably book one.
Having said that i just turned up and got a ticket but that was as I said on
3rd class.
I recall that the distance I covered onboard the train from Penang-Hat
Yai-Bkk-Udon Thani took like 36 hours.
So your guess of 22 hours from Bkk-Penang sounds reasonable to me.
