September 2004? Maybe the reason you cannot make reservations is because it
is too far ahead...
If you had written November 29, it would have made more sense, since that is
the height of the autumn viewing season. But if you do think you cannot stay
in Kyoto for some reason, try finding somewhere close to Shin-Osaka station
(rather than Osaka station). It is then just a short hop on the shinkansen
to Kyoto.
