Where exactly you would want to go depends on your interests, your
budget, and how much time you have.

But here are some ideas:

Tokyo - futuristic architecture and Blade Runner-esque neighborhoods,
with great restaurants, shopping and nightlife
Kyoto - the center of traditional Japanese culture
Kamakura - historic town full of temples not far from Tokyo
Nikko - some of Japan's most beautiful temples
Mount Fuji region - lakes and hiking with Fuji in the background
Nagasaki - in addition to sights relating to the atomic tragedy, it
has many remnants of its past as a trading port
Kanazawa - a ninja temple and samurai houses
Takayama - small town known for its artisans
