The way the media are reporting this, you'd swear virus mutation is just
a matter of minutes away.

Hell, there are millions of viruses out there. Given enough of the right
mutations, almost any one of them could blow away the human race in a
jiffy. The fact is though mutations are (1) rare and (2) largely benign.
