There are no direct buses between the two. You'll have to go back to
Khorat after visiting Phimai. To visit Phanom Rung, take the bus to Surin
or Prasat. The crossroad to Phanom Rung and Muang Tam is about halfway to
Surin (2 hours). Moto drivers are waiting there to get you to the
temples.

In Phimai, don't miss the nice museum (lots of Khmer art). Also, when
returning to Khorat, you can stop to see the small temple of Phanom
Wan (you'll have to walk or hitchhike, because it's 3-4 kilometers from
the main road).

Regarding time, you should count one day for Phimai and one day for Phanom
Rung - Muang Tam.
