Re: Are you going to Tibet???? Posted on: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 10:38:12 +0100

My information on the Chengdu -> Lhasa flight is a little out of date, but I
suspect that you still need to be a member of a "group" to get a ticket; so a
travel agency such as the ones next to the Traffic Hotel would be a place to go.

The altitude can be difficult, but I can offer the following advice

1) Be as fit as you can before going. Concentrate on aerobic exercise (running,
cycling etc) bearing in mind that when your heart rate goes above 70% of your
maximum you are exercising *anerobically*. Stay within 50-70%.

2) Don't overdo things. Full acclimatisation takes weeks, not days. However, you
can be OK provided you don't need to do more than say, sit in a bus...but be
careful. I ascended from 2800 to 5200 in 24 hrs, but as I was sitting down most
of the time I was fine...until I started climbing a hill.

3) Drink loads of water, about 4 litres a day. Bear in mind tea and coffee are
diruetic and count them as equivalent to half their volume in water terms; eg,
0.5 l tea == 0.25l of water

4) Diamox works for acclimatisation. Try 125mg twice a day

5) You are vulnerable to lung infections because of the increased breathing rate
associated with altitude and the amount of dust that is around in Tibet. Try
taking high dosage vitamin C tables morning and night, and have a course of
erithomycin or similar available if you get something.

6) Diarrhea will dehydrate you very quickly, and food poisoning can be
impossible to avoid. Carry a small course of antibiotic gut
pills...unfortunately very likely to be needed :-(
