Subject: Giving gifts in Japan Posted on: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 14:08:55 +0000 (UTC)

I've been offered free accommodation by a couple of people from Japan
which I've met along the way on my round-the-world trip, and I'm
probably going to take them up on it, being a budget traveller, and
enjoying company as well as staying in a local neighbourhood.

The problem of course is that since this is something that has evolved
*during* the trip I haven't prepared myself for it, thus not having
bought a gift.
For my other friend who I stayed with for a week (planned before I
started my trip) I brought something from my home country, but I can't
do this of course, so what would an appropriate gift be (without
breaking the bank, but not being stingy either)?

I was thinking of at least spending a meal while going out and maybe a
few small things here and there, like offering to pay for bus/train
tickets, but I'm really clueless as to what is expected, and how many
gifts/what kind of gifts I should give.

The first person is a student I met in some other country, backpacking
as I am,offering to take me in when I came by his city. I think he has
his own appartment.
The other guy is a friend of his and lives in another city which
I'malso going to. I'm not sure if I've met him, or if he's just a
friend of this first person. I also don't know if he has his own
place,or if he's still living at home. I'mjust mentioning all of this
in case I would have to buy a gift/gifts for every family member.

Advice?
