If you have enough time, then from Chiang Mai the drive out to Mae Hong Son
is pretty good, especially if you are able to stop for a day or two at
places along the way.

Great fun on a motorbike (but those tiny things that you can normally hire
end up gasping on the hills . . .)

If you want to practice your Thai, I think you'll find that in most villages
they take great enjoyment from foreigners trying to speak their language,
but remember that many of them won't be speaking quite the same the Thai as
you might have been learning!

Ignore the often-given advice about avoiding roadside food stalls - these
often have the best food, and are great value.

Oh - and watch out for the temptation to photograph everything. There is a
lot to see!
