It is just a matter of luck. Sometimes they check, sometimes they
don't. It seems the airlines are more likely to check on long-haul
flights than they are if the flight is within Asia. I fly into
Thailand about 8 times a year from elsewhere in Asia and have never
been asked about it. On the occasions when I've been flying from
Europe and they've asked, I've told them I have an onward reservation
with the ticket waiting to be picked-up at a travel agent in Bangkok
and they have always been satisfied with that answer.

It shouldn't matter if you have an electronic ticket issued by Air
Asia because you're still fulfilling the requirements. Just print out
a copy of the confirmation they issue when you book online which shows
the flight details and reservation number.
