The local dialect in southern China is not Cantonese, it is Mandarin.
You will find very few people in Southern China who speak Cantonese,
even though it is partly Canton.
Here in Hong Kong many people do speak Mandarin but the local Hong
Kongers often pretend they do not as they see it as an abasement of who
they are. there are so many mainlanders living and working here now that
it fairly common though.
