If, when he checked in, he showed a passport from one of those countries,
immigration will know about it and will be waiting for him at the jetway.
Also, depending on the origin of the flight, sometimes they do spot checks
at the exit of the plane (just show the cover of your passport). I've seen
this on flights from Africa and the Middle East.
