Some idea of budget would help us to help you - people's definition of
'pricey' varies widely.

It would seem a pity to spend 2 days at the airport, even if Bangkok
isn't your real destination (getting into central Bangkok doesn't take
so long now if you're prepared to pay for the taxi to use the toll
road).

We stayed at the Vieng Tai last stopover (Feb 04). I can't remember a
thing about the hotel itself so it must have been OK. Location was
just round the corner from Khao San Rd - near enough for eating there,
but quiet enough. Khao San Rd is a good place to pick up anything you
need for your travels that you've forgotten to pack, and there are
sights quite near if you change your mind about sightseeing. About
US$50 baht for a double - www.viengtai.co.th

If you do decide you want to stay near the airport, be aware that
'near' is very loosely interpreted by some places, and sketch maps can
be very misleading. And don't plan on buying anything at the airport,
it's a complete rip-off!
