Really? Have you spent much time in Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia?
In Indonesia much (probably over half) of the economy is controlled by
non-Muslims (especially ethnic Chinese). Sometimes Muslims complain that
they are the 2nd class citizens.
In my 20 or so trips to Bali I don't recall hearing any complaints by
Balinese that they are treated as 2nd class, though there are the usual
complaints about central government that you hear almost anywhere.
The Indonesian constitution recognises all monotheistic religions as equal
(unlike say Malaysia which is officially Muslim), though of course in
practice Islam has more influence, hardly a suprise when around 90% of the
population are Muslim.
I have been in Indonesia (Jakarta based) about 15 years off and on and find
it generally a more tolerant society in terms of religious and ethnic
differences than most others I know. (Though I wish they would ban the
4.30am call to prayers!) And yes I do know about problems in Ambon, Sulawesi
etc.
There are some areas where it is an advantage to be Muslim here (getting
jobs and promotion in some government depts etc.) but generally Christians
are the first class citizens by far in economic terms.
