The southernmost provinces of Thailand, which used to constitute the
Malay sultanate of Patani, were annexed and divided up in 1909 (or was
it 1902?). You can read an article about the Sultanate of Patani here:

Since that time, there have been various periods of rebellion and
quiescence. I recall that there was a fair amount of fighting in the
1970s. So though some of the methods currently employed are
particularly brutal and shocking, the fact of a rebellion in Patani is
hardly unprecedented.
