fifth anniversary this year Feb. 16-26.
Sponsored by Yapi Kredi University Banking, the festival is being
organized jointly by the Kolektif Production and AFM Cinemas.
Speaking at a press conference last week at Beyoglu AFM FitaS Movie
Theater, AFM Cinemas General Director Bülent Erdogan said the festival
had some surprises for its visitors.
He said the festival's first surprise was that the movie screenings
would also be shown on the Anatolian side of Istanbul at the newly
opened Caddebostan AFM Budak Cinema in addition to the Beyoglu AFM
FitaS Cinema.
Noting that the festival would be held in Ankara for the first time
this year, Erdogan said they planned to expand the festival to other

"The festival has attracted many fans over the years. We believe this
increasing interest will grow even further especially due to the

previous years.

AFM Migros Cinemas.

* An intensive restoration process has been initiated on a collection
of seals recently unearthed during excavations in the ancient city of
Zeugma, located in Turkey's southeastern province of Gaziantep.
The cleanup is currently being conducted by a team of nine experts
under the guidance of Gaziantep Archaeology Museum Acting Director
Mehmet Onal and is funded by a European Commission grant in the amount
of 152,000 euros.
Mr. Onal told the Anatolia news agency that they planned to finish up
work on the entire collection by October 2007, two years from the time
they started.
He said they had cleaned up and inventoried 5,000 seals to date and
that their aim was to finish up 15,000 seals by May so they can display
them at the museum.
* The Israeli Cameri Theater on last Sunday presented the premiere of
"Requiem," written and directed by Hanoch Levin and based on three
stories by Anton Chekhov, to Turkish audiences.
Taken from three Chekhov pieces, the play focuses on death -- the
deaths of a couple of old peasants, the sorrow of a young mother and
the bereavement of a waggoner.
"Requiem" fuses one-liners with poetry. It is replete with the
symbolic use of expressive images that rely on objects like a bird
winging its way, a desert tree, a snowfall, a shower of rose leaves,
figures on stilts and lantern-bearing black-robed death's-heads.
An icon during his life, Levin was Israel's most esteemed playwright.
Prolific and controversial, his dark comedies, of great psychological
insight and poetry, have both shocked and entranced his audiences.
Levin can delve deeply into a family's dysfunctionality, he can take
form and make it the essence of the play and he uses comic routines to
portray a black and sinister tale.
All his plays are rooted in Israeli society, but they carry a
universal message transcending the local. Death, physical being,
spirituality, torture and humiliation are recurring themes in Levin's
creative
world.

(Turkey, 2003, 113 minutes)
"Under Construction" is a black comedy that casts a satirical eye over
modern Turkey through the story of Ali and Sudi, construction workers
on a building site in a slum district of Istanbul. They dream of saving
enough money to move to Italy, but nightmares are closer at hand when
they discover the site is being used as a graveyard by Nizamettin, the
mafia driver. Lines between human conditions such as innocence, crime,
love, hatred, revenge, forgiveness and betrayal get blurred completely
on the flimsy and jerry rigged construction.
