Already several years ago ( 6 - 7 years) I drove through the North
West and stayed at the Muang Pai Resort in Pai. It is situated above
the town and has small cottages and an open air restaurant. Take
clothes with you as the temperature was as low as 8 °C during our
visit so we did not sleep that much. Pai is 1500 meters above sea
level.
In Mae Hong Song we stayed at the Imperial Tara hotel which is maybe
out of your budget but is well situated just outside the town on the
road to Mae Sariang.
It might be hard to find accommodation around the Christmas period as
many westerners go to Thailand.
Nevertheless, the region is very beautiful and it is good that you are
driving yourself leaving all possibilities open.
