I bought this then went on a survey for my local fish and game to find and trap Ferrets. I had to know EXACTLY where the Ferrets were and return them. This device worked perfectly to tell me where I was and allowed me to get back there, Exactly! I was able to easily switch function from Lat and Lon to the other format (sorry forgot the name of the other format) but the point is, it's function was perfect!
The one down side, is this thing eats batteries quickly when in constant use. On the other hand when in the truck the car charger helps to minimize the high rate of battery life. I was going through 2 sets of batteries in a 9 hour night. Over all, good product.
I bought this after reading several reviews. I am glad I did. It has lived up to my expectations, and more.
I bought this to help map out some remote property we have. We decided to try geocaching since we now have a GPSr (GPS receiver). Our 3 yr old loves "Treasure hunting".
I decided to order the travel kit to accent my unit and I am glad I did.
The PN-40 is easy enough to figure out. The only thing I found that wasn't as easy and straight forward was the map software. The software took a little getting used to and now I love it.
There are others with more experience using GPSr's, but for a first timer I found this to be a great choice.
Bought this for my engineer husband for Christmas, because it seemed to be the top of the line and come equipped with more maps than others. It lasted 3 months then died completely after no ill use. In the process of seeing if the company will give us a new one. If so, I'll revise this review. Until then, buyer beware!
When I first received the unit I was disappointed how thick this unit is, I was expecting it to be a size improvement over my old Garmin Rino which sadly it is not. It is over an inch in thickness which is annoying especially when mounted on a bike. The bike mount that Delorme sells/recommends also isn't ideal. The screen is rather small and the resolution is pretty blocky. BUT this unit sports some winning features. First off it acquires satellites very fast using predictive ephemeris in most instances. Secondly it comes with Delorme Topo maps which provide much better out of the box topo (20 foot intervals) than Garmin does, and you don't have to pay a dime for it! This bundled hybrid Topo map also includes full street / sites of interest information which lets you easily do auto-routing on the unit. The software also does bike routing but the unit only does driving or hiking. This really doesn't matter as I found the bike routing feature to be generally useless. Lastly, all this information on the topo maps means you need a LOT of SD storage space. A 32GB is necessary to store the entire US topo map set. I have a 16GB card and I wish I had gotten 32GB because once you start adding satellite data (kind of like having google earth on the GPS!) you run out of room really quickly! Delorme does not have maps outside the US (I hear Mexico and Canada may be added in Topo 8) so if you're going to Europe all you'll have is a base road map.
After reading the reviews, I finally broke down and bought the PN-40. My last GPS was the Magellan Sport Trak Pro. The Pro was a great GPS and I bought it because of the ability to load topo regions into it. The PN 40 is simply the best unit that I have found for my uses! I do a lot of backpacking and love the ability to down load Color Aerial photos or Satellite Imagery into the unit along with the detailed mapping software. It does take a little fumbling around to figure the mapping out, but it is well worth it. The only function it doesn't have that the Magellan had is the ability to project a profile in front or to the sides of the track you're on. Overall, I couldn't be happier for the purchase of the PN40, the functions and how blazing fast this unit is, is totally remarkable.
