To answer your questions:

Color: Black is hard to recognize, but grey gets dirty with one
flight. I think it is important to have recognizable luggage to reduce
the chance that someone will take it by mistake. If you do go with
black, make sure you attach something unique and visible.

Construction: Definitely get a bag that has wheels and a pop up
handle. Test the handle to make sure it is very sturdy.

Weight: If you going to fly within Asia be aware that there are
significant weight restrictions for checked baggage and carry-ons, so
try to get something light and weigh your bag before you go to make
sure you are within the limits posted on the airlines' websites. If
you are overweight you risk paying very hefty fees.

Brand: I agree with the others that you should not get a brand that is
flashy or too well known for risk of theft. The advantage of going
with a reputable luggage brand (like delsey, samsonite, etc) is that
they have guarantees and will fix or replace your luggage if it
breaks. I dont think the brands I mentioned will put you at as much
risk of theft as Louis Vitton or Ralph Lauren which are more well
known brands outside of just luggage.

Stores: Macy's had a wide selection and often has big sales. However,
I would try some other options first. Costco is a great place to buy
luggage because they have good quality and price as well as a great
return policy. If anything happens to your luggage, they will let you
return it. Also, try discount stores like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls,
etc.. They have the same brand name luggage as Macy's but for a
fraction of the price.

Packing: Pack your toiletries in ziplocks before you put them in your
nice, new luggage. They always leak, especially with cabin pressure!

My luggage. I have Delsy silver luggage. It has withstood heavy-duty
travel and abuse. I love it, my only complaint is that the marks and
dirt show on it. The handle on my husband's suitcase broke and Delsy
fixed it for free.

I traveled around Asia for 5 weeks and posted all of my travel tips on
my website, www.tuktuktips.com
In addition to packing tips, there are a lot of tips that I think will
help make your trip a little bit easier. Check it out and let me know
what you think. Safe Travels!
