One thing to be wary of. The various bookers in Sydney are
quite good
http://www.wotif.com/
http://www.ratestogo.com.au/
http://www.needitnow.com.au/needitnow/needitnow.asp
But be wary of the Lastminute.com "secret rooms". The prices
are great, the bed and fittings quality is usually good, but
the room sizes can be incredibly tiny. I once got a twin
with them where the two single beds could only fit in the
room head-to head.
I also found the hard way that the star ratings on
http://www.check-in.com.au/ are self-rated. There are some
good hotels/apartments there, but also some rough ones. Be
wary.
Another tip. Once you have got it down to a short list it is
often worth ringing the hotel direct and seeing if they will
match the internet offer. Sometimes, not always, they will.
That has the advantage of normal cancellation and payment
rules rather than paying up front, and you can also be sure
about the little extras like breakfasts, cooking facilities
(if any), parking if needed, shuttles and transport etc.
Sometimes I ring and if they won't match the price I advise
them I am about to book based on their answers, to alert
them to my needs when the booking arrives, then note that
conversation in the "comments" section of the booking.
