I have been weighing the options of how to get from Melbourne to
Tasmania during an upcoming family trip to Australia, and I would like
to take the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry, but the price is substantially
higher than Qantas airfares. I have seen in the SOT brochure and on
their web site that they offer "Apex" fares, which are described as
discounted advance booked two-way fares and are available on the
Melbourne to Devonport route. I have not seen any information about
what these fares actually are, and I was wondering if anyone has used
these and can give me an idea of the amount of the discount.
We will be travelling to Tasmania for the second week of December this
year, and the return fares (2x one-way fare) appear to add up to about
$1100 AUD for our family of 4 (with one infant) in an inside 4 berth
cabin. This compares with the Qantas flights that would be about $700
return. If the "Apex" fares are substantially cheaper than the one-way
fares then I might be able to justify taking the ferry.
Thanks for any help!
