Try an agent with a bit of imagination and one that can think outside
the square. Air Canada has a special on at the moment to
Honolulu for mid $800 return. Any website of one of the U.S.
carriers that fly HNL-LAX should get you a decent return fare on
that portion - if you're lucky you may even pick up a super special
fare.
Combining the two, you should have a very decent fare. It's not
nonstop, but it's certainly a darn sight cheaper than what is on
offer on the nonstops.
