I was in NZ south island at the same time this year (Feb-March 05) We did
not book anything before getting to NZ apart from the initial 2 nights when
we arrived of a flight at Christchurch late at night. Even this was only
booked 2 days in advance.Once in NZ there are some excellent guide books
listing the Motels/hotels etc, these are freely available from just about
all motels etc. We only booked 1 to 2 days in advance as we didn't know
where we would be. Occasionally our first choice was not available but there
is plenty of accommodation so was never a concern. If you have your
own/hired car then it is no problem as you can stay slightly further out of
towns etc if needbe.
