Yes! You can have 4 seasons in one day in NZ.
The Southern Alps which you will be travelling amidst - does that ring
a bell for you - high elevations, snow, ice etc?

Down south, I'd say expect some frosts which could make for icy roads.

There's an old saying down there - as the days begin to lengthen, the
cold begins to strengthen. And yes, just as summer has started here,
winter has started in the Southern Hemisphere.

Know what you mean - I am in TX and with the many severe t/storms we
get, outages are common.
I went back to Christschurch in April a few years ago after living
many years in San Diego, CA. I had forgotten what 'cold' was; plus
had forgotten about icy surfaces - slipped on ice and broke my arm.
