Normally I go for the backpacker type vacations taking only a backpack and a
Lonely Planet guide. But one thing I've found is the LP always says
everything is wonderful and often I end up very disappointed. So I like to
get recommendations from other travelers to compare experiences with the LP.
Anyway, we booked a 2 week all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana, Dominican
Republic. I'm curious if there are some things to do in the cities that
would appeal to backpacker type travelers. I know there are some
excursions, but I was hoping to see the real Dominican Republic. I haven't
read a few things for the capital Santo Domingo, both good and bad. I know
there's a small town not too far from the resorts called Higüey, I've
searched Google and haven't found much about it. Any experiences in the
"real" Dominican Republic?
