Just spent a week in Trinidad. The island remains lush green year
around and the Trinis are as friendly as ever. The shark and bake at
Maracas Bay is still as mouth watering and popular as ever except it
is TT$4 more than three years ago. (TT$12 rather than TT$8, that's
about US$2) If you don't listen to the frequent radio broadcast
reminding listeners of the kidnapping statistics, nothing has changed.

From talking to Trinis, the kidnapping is aimed at locals for the
purpose of extracting ransom money. Tourists are not targets. But I
was warned to not drive on certain roads after dark and I did follow
the advice.

Trinidad has a population of 1 million. Colombia has 40 million. If
Colombia has 40 kidnapping a year and Trinidad has 1, they will have
the same percentage.
