I've had it done in Cozumel before - no problem as long as it's not
completely packed. They'd rather book the room than see you leave and have
it empty. Maybe pop into a few other hotels and check rates for leverage
before going to the front desk.
Doing it before hand might help, too. You can usually cancel rooms with
little or no fee with 24 hours notice at most hotels.
