It's exactly like carrying a backpack - except that it's harder to take off
at the end of the walk.

Mass is mass, and takes energy to move. It doesn't matter whether or it's
held onto you by straps, duct tape, or skin cells.

This is the same as how a large car takes more energy to drive than a small
one. More fuel burned, just like more calories burned.
