Glad things worked out; it sounds like you had an unnecessary hassle.
Recently, I had a suitcase zipper on a checked bag get torn up, which of
course the airline (LAN) will blame on the airport's luggage belts so as
to set up the inevitable liability finger pointing circle that is more
easily resolved through self-help and self-insurance.
After all, things do break. Personally, I'm not going to allow a tiny
loss mar my enjoyment of a vacation. Which is partly why I often carry
a travel roll of duct tape as well as an emergency sewing kit, etc.
It may seem like the Cruise ship industry will provide insurance for
just about anything, but when it comes to collecting, it does appear
that you either should think about 'forgetting it' or be willing to be
an asshole customer to get the resolution you want. It often has little
to do with liability, for its should be no mystery that businesses want
to minimize outlays that reduce profit, and that ambiguous or hard to
prove loss claims are an all too easy opportunity for them to do so.
