I have done this. Yes you can go on the smaller road that passes thorugh
Coba. Please be advised that this road may not be in great shape (last time
I was there, but it was 5 years ago, it was in very bad repair).
It would be easier to do it and stay nearby. I'd recommend that you consider
doing Chichen Itza at the very end (or beginning) of your trip, make a
reservation for the night before (and maybe the night after) in either Piste,
the town Chichen Itza is near, or Valladolid, about 20 minutes away, in order
to be able to be there when it opens. (Alternativvely, leave at about 6 AM.)
You want to get there early to both see it when it is cooler (but you may end
up spending the whole day, we did) and/or to miss the cruise ship crowds that
show up later int he day.

Very possible. I would not visit this area without a day trip to Cozumel and
at least a day trip to Chichen Itza, and one to Tulum/Coba.
