I've been there twice, and not always in the resort areas and I love the area.

I'd not ever describe it as a cesspool.
There are poor people there, in small rural villages, but they appear to be
people with a great heritage and not at all the kind of dirty demeaning poverty
that we see in the states.
Maybe you are talking about Cancun?
