I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest Montserrat. There's a
great dive instructor there ('Sea Wolf') who will give you one-
on-one attention, and a whole variety of dive sites, from easy
shallow reefs off the beach [great for night dives] to deep water.
He is an excellent instructor and what you'll learn about bouyancy
control will make your dive career enjoyable not just for you but
for the wildlife and everyone else too.
The live volcano makes life interesting, and there are plenty of
interesting jungle hikes up the mountains. There are non-deluxe
places to stay and it's off the beaten track. Plus, when I was
living there we had maybe a dozen medical students come through
at various times working on projects, having a bit of a sponsored
break. You could contact the Government of Montserrat to speak
to the current Chief Medical Officer to see if they're still into
having med students come through and maybe a couple of hours of
research a day will pay for a month long stay.
