To me, traveling by car on Jamaican roads appears to be somewhat
risky. Although I've been across the island many times by car
and accept the risk, the potential for being involved in a serious
accident is high enough for me to be somewhat uncomfortable during the trip.
The problem is excessive speed and reckless passing by Jamaican drivers
on narrow roads that in many cases are in poor condition. I would never
consider driving myself as this would just increase the risk; They drive
on the left and there are special driving skills used to stay out of trouble.
Thats being said, I have friends who drive all over the island and are not
overly concerned about safety so it boils down to a subjective perception of
what is safe and unsafe. Regarding being a victim of crime, I think that risk
is very small compared to the road risk.
