There's a list around someplace (BritishExPats?) that would be my first
source of places to investigate.
BUT I suggest you do as you should when moving *anywhere*, go there
first. The place perfect for me could be pergatory for you, and vice
versa. I'd boil it down to a short list of places, perhaps a dozen, then
go there for long enough to see what it's really like. Some places will
eliminate themselves immediately. Others won't show their ugly side for
months -- the rainy season, for instance. In addition, a spot only a few
miles down the coast may be perfect, so you should be talking to ex-pats
in-country as you do this. That could create a second short list.
In any case, I'd rent in my "final" choice for 6 months or a year before
choosing some place to buy. You're choosing your home for a long time,
hopefully. This is no time to rush into anything and you're going to a
*foreign* country, with a foreign culture. There's a steep learning
curve.
(Note, this is an expansion of what a local radio talk show host
specializing in retirement said when considering moving to Florida,
which is isn't a foreign country, though culture shock rears its head
even there.)
