You really think if a bunch of the passengers jumped up and shouted
"Stop, we're US citizens" and flashed their National ID that it would
have made a difference? Hmmm, never thought of it that way, it might
have created a big enough diversion...unless the hijackers raise them a
stolen, forged, or likely even a real national ID. Anyway, I really
don't think a national ID would have saved the day. We need more.

First we must restrict all travel, only allowing that which is
government approved. Consider that the planes used were going from a US
airport to a US airport. That demonstrates that local travel is the
choice for terrorists. So if we restrict all local travel, then we in
turn restrict the terrorist's ability to get to his/her target. It
follows that we also reduce the possible targets and that reduces the
overall effect of any possible action.

Besides, who needs to travel? If you think about it there are only
three reasons to travel. And only two of them valid. There is
business. That's a valid reason to travel. So you'd have government
approved business travel passes. Another reason is family
emergency/event/etc. That is another valid reason, so there would be
passes approved for that too. Then there is vacation. But that's not a
valid reason, their are plenty of local vacation areas, use them and
boost your local economy. Well, maybe we'd have VIP vacation travel
passes, but they'd be something one would have to earn by contributing
something to society. So basically we have family and business travel.
Any other form of travel is only something criminals do.

To get family or business travel passes you'd of course need a valid
national ID, along with four other forms of identification, additional
proof of residency (a utility bill will do), along with a corporate
travel itinerary signed by both parties and both local police
departments (this would assure their notification that you were in the
area so they could help protect you).

Additionally we also need to take the pocketpc concept further.
Everyone should be required to carry their digital records with them on
a local database. An interface to that database would be provided via
bluetooth. Others in your immediate proximity would be allowed to query
those devices.

Things like arrests for child molestation would launch javascript popups
on the general public's devices when a pedo was near. Those who are
suspected of terrorism could trigger javascript popups on police level
devices. That way we'd know at all times who was around us and be able
to prepare.

We need these to guarantee our safety.
