After you leave bagage claim in Cancun, you must walk through a
gauntlet of people in this big hall. They offer taxis, rental cars,
time share deals, rooms, books and whatever. Try to get you over to
their counters on the left side of the hall. On the right side are the
official rental car counters for all of the US and European majors.
Just make a reservation with any of them and go to the counter. They
will direct you to a shuttle bus that will just take you across the
road to their lots. Smaller brands will have people standing in the
gauntlet with clipboards and you find them and then follow them out to
their more distant buses.
Remember, cars are metric. Cops are corrupt. You are guilty until
proven innocent. And if you cannot drive a stick shift, specifically
request an automatic. The Hotel Zone is 80% taxis and people drive
like NYC taxi drivers. It is not unheard of to cause an accident with
an obviously norteamericano tourist and try to work it out "quietly"
without calling the cops.
Vehicle choice runs is the full US cars, suplemented by an even smaller
micro car. You should have no problem finding an SUV from any of the
standard brands.
For good fun its fun to rent a real VW Beatle, which were made there
until 2001 and are still in the fleets.
If all you are doing is going to a hotel, you are much better off just
taking a shared van shuttle. You do not need a car, and taxis are
super-plentiful and cheep. No place has much parking.
