You need to stay inside the reefs. The southern end of the Cancun
peninsula does not have a reef, so avoid that area. We did snorkelling
and scuba diving in Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Akumal. No problems with
currents, however the water was very cold- in February. Insist on a
neoprene suit even just if you're snorkelling. I can't speak for other
areas.

It's advisable to avoid fresh fruit and the famous aguas frescas. A
pity, because they taste great. The supermarkets sell some stuff that
you should dissolve in water to wash fruit and salad if you prepare your
own food.
