What about Mexico? (And here I'm not suggesting Mexico == Cancun).
You could do some quiet private beaches, go to some very quiet and
historical little old towns, lose yourselves in another culture and
bond by both of you having to get by together in spanish (assuming
you're not both fluent). I would recommend non-resort Cuba for
this, but you live in US. So off-the-beaten-track Mexico seems an
obvious choice.
You could also think about Puerto Rico, maybe? What about Rio?
You didn't say when you wanted to go. You say warm, so I assume
it will be this winter?
Depending on the time of year, what about maybe Spain or Portugal
(both beach and history, though the euro prices would probably
bite seriously)? Morocco could be fun but I imagine that's far
more expensive to get there.
Flights to S.Africa (via NY) now stop in Senegal. Senegal would
be a fascinating place, and maybe you could get a cheap flight.

I must admit, it doesn't bode well.
