We drank the water all over Cuba with no problem, in cities, small
communities, and in the middle of nowhere.
Can't answer on the mosquitos, but we had plenty in January the year we
went. Just use your anti-skeeter lotion, spray, etc.
Tipping in Cuba is a different concept -- they need so much on the island.
If you have cosmetics and toiletries, like the soaps and lotions that we get
in hotels, take those with you and give them out. Pencils, pens, other
school supplies. Clothes you don't need. Aspirin, bug spray, etc. etc. We
left behind all our toiletries, first aid stuff, etc. when we left.
I wasn't in a resort (bike trip), but in my experience, the Cuban people are
warm, friendly, resourceful, and inquisitive. They were very interested in
checking out our bikes, cameras, etc.; not in a bad way, but because they
are genuinely interesting in seeing new things. There is very little waste,
or trash. They know how to make everything work for them. We visited a
school, and I'll never forget seeing little children with their juice and
water from home -- in old Bacardi bottles :-)
Going to Cuba is not like going to other Caribbean islands. But it's a
wonderful experience.
