Hi Linda,
5 kids aged from 18 - 26 yr old...Should it be congratulations or
commiserations ;-)
Have you tried Jamaica? My Jamaican friends tell me that the safety
issues are found in only a small part of down-town Kingston. Places
like Negril are cool and the nightlife is definitely authentic and
interesting for 18 to 26 years olds. Guadeloupe is another alternative
- however it's very developed - think of the south of France in the
caribbean. I spent some time in St Martin and Anguilla many many years
back. St Marten was a bit too commercial for me, however there were
things to do at night. Anguilla was hot, flat with beautiful beaches. I
hear it now has many restaurants, exclusive condo resorts and lots of
rich folks doing very little, dressed in very little..most of the time.
D/ca is great for nature-based activities - the ledendary hike to the
boiling lake is one of the best in the region in my opinion. There are
also lots of community base tourism projects strting up. It's a good
destination if you want to get your kids involved in responsible
tourism. However it's not hot on night-life. Unless like me,
night-diving, star-gazing and recovering from a hard day climbing
mountains is what you call "hot" night-life ;-). there's certainy an
opportunity for your kids to start something - check out 3 Rivers, it's
down-to-earth, very basic accommodations and very affordable. The
owner, Gem may also be able to arrange local night-time entertainment
for you. It won't be discos and casinos tho' ;-)
Regards
David
