Costa Rica is nice, but San Jose is NOT a beach location. There are
beach locations in Costa Rica, but the places I've been have not also
had shops and restaurants.

For Spanish places, I have been to San Juan, but it isn't a beach
place. I'm sure there are beaches in Puerto Rico - I just am not
familiar with them.

If I were a woman (well I am a woman of course), traveling alone
(which I don't normally do) and wanted to go to a beach place with
shops and restaurants where Spanish was spoken, I'd go to Cozumel.

I think there are some nice beaches in the Dominican Republic, but I
don't know if the shops etc are near the hotels in those places with
beaches.

You might also consider the Canary Islands.
