A side trip to Merida for a day or two. This town has lots of the
Spanish Colonial architecture that is associated with "old" Mexico.
There's also an open air market with more indigenous crafts and less of
the tourista chachcas made in China.
Playa del Carmen is more laid back than Cancun. If your idea is not an
All Inclusive mega resort but a hotel on the beach in a smaller scale
"Playa" is for you. If you want an AI on a smaller scale, you can find
these in Playa del Carmen and Playacar to the south.
