Not sure what you're asking here, but anyway:
1) There was one occasion many years earlier when I was going to a
scientific meeting in the West (I think in Europe) where it was known
that Soviet scientists would be coming (perhaps because someone had
applied for visas for them); and a couple of CIA guys came to my
university office beforehand and asked if I would try to find out what I
could about Soviet activities in, I think it was, "high power lasers"
and report back to them afterwards.
I really don't recall much beyond that -- long time ago -- except that I
went to the meeting; I don't think I actually learned much if anything
about Soviet high-power lasers (the Soviet attendees probably talked
about other more basic topics); and I probably reported this when I got
back, but I don't actually remember doing so.
Have never received a similar request on any other occasion, including
the Bulgarian trip.
2) I'm not aware that NSF was ever "strongly funded" by CIA. Other
agencies may have been; NSF may even have been, in some small way, and I
wasn't aware of it; but there was absolutely no indication that this
program was CIA funded or CIA motivated. |
