The FIRST question is: On WHICH airline?
It makes a BIG difference in the carry-on allowance. 7 kilos or 15.4
lbs
limit for carry-on on Qantas, British Air, and a few other airlines,
while most others have carry-on allowance DOUBLE or TRIPLE that.
Even the CHECKED luggage allowance on Qantas makes it rough to pack.
When we were in Cairns flying Qantas to Sydney, we left TWO pieces
of 70 lb luggage at the Cairns Hilton, and retrieved them on our
way back to LAX via Cairns. :-) Did the same in Singaore: leaving
two such bags at the SIN Conrad when we flew Singapore Air for Bali,
and picked them back on our return.
NEXT question: Do you have a carry-on luggage LIGHT enough so that
the CONTENT plus the luggage-empty-weight is within the allowance?
Yes, Andy. You can do it, even on Qantas, if you use a paper bag
as your luggage for say 14 lbs of clothing and toiletries for a
week or more. :-) But it helps if you're an Elite member of
the Princess cruise line -- which allows you unlimited same-day
laundry or dry clean services without charge, free shoe shine,
etc.
Formal wear? WHy is everyone so concerned about it. It doesn't
weigh that much! My entire formal tux outfit (not counting shoes)
weighs less than 3 lbs. Black street shoe will work, and if you're
really strapped for weight, leave the striped pants home and
wear the tux with your regular black pants.
Ok. That leaves you room for more than 10 lbs of OTHER stuff.
How much can your toiletries weigh? A pound? T-shirts? Other
shirts?
You can pick a few lightweight ones and work it out. It looks
like with a 14 lb NET weight allowance, you can have all of the
above plus a bottle or two of wine to take on to celebrate your
light travel. :-)
