Well my dh was in the Navy for 20 years so I personally can survive
fine with just my own company. But the cars we have now require his
time an attention, and they all broke down as soon as he left. If he
didn't enjoy working on them, we wouldn't have that kind of (cheap and
old) car, but he does and it doesn't matter much if he's here.

Because it is cheaper than doing in dependant travel (flying and then
getting a hotel) to some locations that I'd like to see.
