After making a donation to the Red Cross, I started looking for another
charity, to make an additional donation. Kind of to hedge my bets, as I
remember that there was some talk of the Red Cross diverting some of the
9-11 funds for other purposes. I found
www.charitynavigator.org
which rated charities based on what percentage of funds raised actually
go to the cause (among other things). So I plan to make additional
donations to AmeriCares and Second Harvest, both of which spend only 1
cent to raise a dollar--vs. the Red Cross, which spends 18 cents to
raise $1. Don't get me wrong--this is not a criticism of the Red Cross.
As I said, they are the first charity I contributed to.
A woman I know has made donations to both the Red Cross and the Humane
Society--she says, with some validity, that pets are like family to the
elderly and childless. After looking on Charity Navigator, though, it
looks like PetSmart Charities give the most. Only 12 cents are spent to
raise $1, vs. 25 cents for the Humane Society and the ASPCA.
